SCHEDULE:
Subject to change, as needed, by instructor.

WEEK 1: Observation and Immediacy (DRAWING)
August 19- Introduction to class and 50/4 Drawing Assignment. Go through syllabus, begin with sketches. THIS IS A WORK DAY! BRING IN YOUR DRAWING SUPPLIES!
August 21- Continue with drawing. Paper stretching demo at end of class. BRING SUPPLIES!

WEEK 2: Line, Structure, and Mark-making (DRWG/ ACRYLIC)
August 26- 50/4 Drawing Assignment DUE. Continue with drawing.
August 28- Intro to acrylic paint. Media experiments and media studies on paper. Still life study in value (black & white on white paper).

WEEK 3: Value, Blocking, Positive & Negative (ACRYLIC)
September 2—Mid-tone, grisaille introduction (black & white on grey ground)
September 4--Introduction of positive/ negative space, reflectivity (black & white on black paper).

WEEK 4: COLOR! (ACRYLIC)
September 9—Grisaille study DUE. Color lecture, begin color experimentation. testing color + value relationships (Black and white on toned paper). Monochrome still life due next class.
September 11-- MONOCHROME still life DUE. Color lecture continued. Complimentary studies on white, black, and toned grounds. Assign color wheel.

WEEK 5: COLOR! continued (ACRYLIC)
September 16COLOR WHEEL DUE. Answer questions about color mixing in acrylic. Analogous color studies. Introduce STILL LIFE PROJECT Panel DEMO in shop (REQUIRED!)
September 18—Unexpected color painting. Psychological color effects.

WEEK 6: Psychology in Image Building (ACRYLIC)
September 23-- UNEXPECTED COLOR painting DUE. Discuss narrative and intent in composition. Discuss object choice to reinforce color composition. Bring in objects to work on STILL LIFE.  WORK DAY!!
September 25—STILL LIFE DUE. Critique day! Discuss materials for painting with oils.

WEEK 7: Direct Painting (OIL)
September 30—Intro to oils. Basic Color theory Review. Basic Color Mixing for painters: Laying out a palette, Creating earth and intermediate colors (mixing complements), Shades, Tints, Color Chart (oil). Intro to MASTER COPY/ MASTER STUDY
October 2-- Color Chart DUE.  Alla prima painting

WEEK 8: Direct Painting (Cont) (OIL)
October 7—Discuss Fat over Lean  Stretcher DEMO in shop (REQUIRED!)
October 9-- FALL BREAK


WEEK 9: Color Blending and Immediacy (OIL)
October14— Intro to Scumbling,
October16--  Intro to Dry brush

WEEK 10: Intro to Indirect Painting: Glazing! (OIL)
October 21-- MASTER COPY/ MASTER STUDY DUE Intro to LANDSCAPE  Intro to Glazing
October 23—Glazing OVER grisaille, glazing continued

WEEK 12: Color, Layering, and Composition (OIL)
October 28-- Intro to Hatching
October 30-- LANDSCAPE DUE. Intro to Intro to Broken Stroke. PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF PORTRAIT

WEEK 13: Texture and Psychology (OIL)
November 4--Intro to Impasto
November 6--Intro to Palette Knife

WEEK 14: Why we make art (OPEN)
November 11: PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF PORTRAIT DUE. Intro to FINAL
November 13: Lecture on CONCEPT and ARTIST STATEMENT

WEEK 15: Portfolio Reviews! FINAL PAINTING (OPEN)
November 18: Portfolio reviews*/ work day for FINAL PROJECT
November 20: Portfolio reviews*/ work day for FINAL PROJECT

WEEK 16: FINAL PAINTING (Cont) (OPEN)
November 25: Work day for FINAL PROJECT
November 27: THANKSGIVING


WEEK 17: FINAL PAINTING (Cont) (OPEN)
December 2: Work day for FINAL PROJECT
December 4: FINAL PROJECT DUE. Hang show.

*Portfolios must contain all IN CLASS assignments, HOMEWORK, NOTEBOOKS, and PROJECTS
