Hwk: 9/4 Building VOLUME & UNDERPAINTNG
"The grisaille (pronounced griz-eye) technique is a method of painting in shades of gray—what are known as monochrome shades. Monochrome refers to either the use of a single color or a grayscale range of shades. These shades are created by mixing black and white pigments to varying degrees. Often, grisaille painting is used either as a practice technique for beginning artists or as an underpainting method which provides the foundation over which color glazes are layered."

We have begun to look at objects in terms of VALUE and VOLUMETRIC SPACE, rendering WHAT YOU SEE, versus what you know to be true. To this point we have dealt with black and white on both black and white surfaces. In class today we began with grey, creating grisalle paintings. What we are attempting to do is create an image based purely on tone and in terms of space. Please go through the following websites and understand what these underpaintings are, along with the difference between grisaille, brunaille, and verdaille paintings.

For homework--I want you to create a brunaille painting, at least 12" x 9" of at least two immobile objects. DO NOT FORGET YOUR FRAME, FOREGROUND, & BACKGROUND. I want these to be complete images in space.
