Mason - Acrylics

RESEARCH at least 3 painting techniques, 3 supports, 3 grounds, and 3 tools (as well as how to CARE FOR THESE TOOLS) for working with ACRYLIC. POST THIS with brief explanations (descriptions) for each to the blog.

Painting Techniques

- Acrylics are often preferred since they dry faster on the canvas than oils and other types of paint. However, in the event that you want acrylic paints to stay moist longer, you can spray a light mist of water on top occasionally.

- Acrylic glazes are used to show layers underneath, creating a more realistic image. After several layers of acrylic paint have dried, rubbing alcohol can also be used to reveal colors from layers below.

- By pouring acrylic paints onto the surface and tilting the canvas, the colors blend naturally together to create interesting effects.

Supports and Grounds Supports are defined as any material on which paint is applied. Wood, canvas, and paper are good examples of supports. A ground is a surface specially prepared for painting - usually a layer of gesso, gel, or paint applied to the surface before other mediums are applied.

Tools Tools for acrylic paints can include a huge variety of things - pretty much anything goes! The most common of these tools are brushes. Once you are done using your brush, you should try to rinse the brush immediately from the base of all paint - using dish soap or shampoo helps a lot, as well as never storing your brushes vertically or leaving them in water (they should be stored vertical head-side up or horizontally). Other tools to use with acrylic paint include palette knives and sponges. To clean plastic or metal palette knives is pretty easy - just rinse them off in water using a little soap and/or scrape off the excess paint with a cloth rag. To clean sponges, you should immediately soak and rinse it in warm water and soap after you are done using it, otherwise you might need to attempt turpentine or nail polish remover to remove the paint after it has dried.
